inconsistent speeds - 2 x towers nearby

Hi, apologies if this has been covered before.

Overall I am happy with this service (purchased because of NBN stuff ups leaving me high and dry).

I live in suburban Melbourne (Springvale South) and fully expected to be getting the 12 mb/s speeds.

I get this speed only occasionally with most sessions on the 5mb/s speeds.

I added 2 x external antennas to the router and whilst this increased the modem stats so they pretty much all showed as 'excellent' - unexpectedly, I then more often got the 5mb/s speed sessions.

I looked up information on what towers are around me and it turns out that the nearest tower does not support 2300 spectrum for Optus whereas the next nearest tower does (one is just under 1km away and one is just over).

I'm assuming this is why I am mostly seeing the 5mb/s speeds and then occasionally the 12mb/s speeds depending on which tower I am connected with.

I removed the external antennas and now I get the 12 mb/s speeds a little more often. Typically if I have only one or two signal strength lights showing I will be on the higher speed whereas when I have full bars highlighted I will be on the lower speed.

I don't suppose there is any way I can 'lock' onto the tower that is slightly further away in order to achieve 12mb/s speeds more consistently?

Hi Andrew,

Thanks for taking the time to read the other topics that might have a similar problem to you, and give you an understanding.

You are correct about the tower(s) not supporting 2300MHz and the main reason why you are only achieving the 5/1, and not consistently the 12/1 when you do temporarily connect to the tower 1Km away that has 2300MHz.

By having the external antenna's attached, the modems signal would be much stronger, hence connect to the closest towers which would be the lesser speed of 5/1.

These LTE Modems cannot be locked into one specific tower. The previous 4G Wimax modems could be locked on to a specific tower. So that option is out.

The only thing I can suggest is to firstly take note of the Cell-ID's of the different towers and the speeds received 5/1 & 12/1 speeds. Once you have identified the different towers and the speeds they transmit, the next thing to do would be to either try small micro rotations with the modem in its current position OR different locations if possible within your property towards the tower you believe is transmitting 2300MHZ, noting the Cell-ID as you do. The Cell-ID is on the Home page of the modems interface once you login.

Having just looked on the Optus Service Map, there are many towers surrounding Springvale South. If you click on the link to this website, click on the Outage Tab and insert your Suburb/Postcode, it will show you where the towers are located and hopefully assist in relocating the modem. This map does not tell you the spectrum frequency unfortunately.

Hope the above helps and let us know how things went.

Thanks for the reply Ozz. I'll do as you suggest and mess around a bit.

Sorry Andrew, forgot to add the link for you as I mentioned in my post.

Since I congratulated you a week or two ago, I have been getting no more than one MPS to 2 MPS most of the day. I have moved my modem all over the house without any benefit at all.
I hate to say this, but I'm sure that soon I will have to consider leaving vivid wireless because it has really been a disappointment and certainly not worth the investment and certainly not the price.
